Cleo Parker Robinson Dance
“Cleo Parker Robinson’s Dance Ensemble are rare, transcendent moments when art is imperative, and the audience becomes a collective witness to a communion that leaves them cleansed, at least momentarily, and enlightened.”
Cleo Parker Robinson Dance (CPRD) is internationally esteemed as one of America’s foremost modern dance companies and regarded as a cultural ambassador, infusing vitality, innovation and education into every community they touch around the world. Founded by Cleo Parker Robinson in 1974, CPRD performs a dynamic body of work fusing the African American experience with ethnic and modern dance traditions from around the world. Legendary and emerging artists alike are drawn by the spirit of the company to create works that transcend the boundaries of culture, class and age while unequivocally and beautifully communicating the complexity of the human condition.
This performance will include the Texas premiere of The Four Journeys, a new work conceived by Maestra Amalia Viviana Basanta Hernandez, Artistic Director of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. Centered on Mexican folk icon Catarina de San Juan’s global journey from India to 17th century Mexico, the new ballet examines the confluence of culture in Mexico from its diverse Indigenous heritage to the more recent influences of European, African and Asian infusions. This work also features a collaboration with Japanese video mapping artist, Taketo Kobayashi. The Four Journeys garnered Cleo Parker Robinson Dance a prestigious National Dance project award from the New England Foundation on the Arts.
