An experimental art form rooted in authenticity
Flamenco is an art form that comes from the same wellspring as the Punk movement; SONIDOS DE LIBERTAD tells the story of the history of Punk through the language and coding of flamenco.
An enduring theory is that the precursors of flamenco started during the Spanish Inquisition, when the Roma, African, and Jewish communities were targeted for extinction. Those who were not burnt at the stake fled to the hills and caves of Andalusia, where the nascent strains of flamenco were heard. These communities played key roles in the development and evolution of flamenco as we know it today; transmitting sorrow, fear, grief, joy, hope, pain, the range of human expression that cries out against oppression and cries out for freedom. We are faced with the choice of apathy or denial, as many of us do because we are already exhausted from trying to live our lives or to dissent. Punk chose to dissent. There can be no Punk without tyranny, for punk is an outcry against it.
“Always remembering the masters of flamenco, Adira keeps a keen eye to the future, bridging both the traditional and the new school.”
