Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping – a polyrhythmic, percussive dance form practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities that uses body as an instrument. Step Afrika! blends this percussive dance style with traditional West and Southern African dances; and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience that leaves audiences on their feet.
Since its founding, the company has garnered international acclaim and evolved into one of America’s great cultural exports, touring more than 60 countries across the globe, and now ranks as one of the preeminent African American dance companies in the United States. The Company is featured prominently at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History & Culture with the world’s first interactive exhibit on the art form of stepping.
