Lady Wray
Classy retro-soul shot through with the delicious boom-bap thwack of 90s R&B
Lady Wray, formerly known as Nicole Wray, is no stranger to the music business, having been featured on Missy Elliott’s debut album and landing a top 10 hit with “Make It Hot”. Her latest album, Piece of Me, is a continuation of her previous record, picking up where Wray and Big Crown Records label co-owner/producer Leon Michels left off with Queen Alone. On Piece of Me, it’s still R&B with a heavy dose of soul, but you’ll hear boom-bap-smacked drums and chunky basslines front-and-center, creating a dense backdrop for Lady Wray to traverse.
Hailing from Rialto, CA, two-thirds of Brainstory, Kevin and Tony Martin are brothers by blood, while Eric Hagstrom is a brother through their music and long-term friendship. Simply put, Brainstory’s new album Sounds Good, lives up to its name with the band’s unique blend of psychedelic soul permeating each track, as well as nods to Chicano rock flair that they grew up listening to.
“Her voice transfixes – she’s got that element of soul you cannot reach by just “hitting the right notes”
– Brontez Purnell, The New York Times Magazine
