Two-time Oscar nominee and seven-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard pays homage to legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter, the inspiration that has influenced Blanchard’s music and storytelling. The celebrated jazz trumpeter is joined by his ensemble, The E-Collective, and double Grammy Award-winning Turtle Island Quartet to perform arrangements of Shorter’s music along with an array of original compositions by Blanchard and members of his collective.
A powerful artistic force in jazz, Blanchard’s brilliance goes far beyond the genre. He is also known for his expansive scores for Spike Lee films, such as his Oscar-nominated score for BlacKkKlansman (2018), as well as his grand operas, including Fire Shut Up in My Bones which debuted at the Met in 2021 – the first opera written by an African American composer to be presented at The Met in its history.
Winner of the 2006 and 2008 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album, the Turtle Island Quartet fuses classical with contemporary American musical styles. Superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma called them “a unified voice that truly breaks new ground – authentic and passionate – a reflection of some of the most creative music-making today.”
Blanchard stands tall as one of jazz’s most-esteemed trumpeters and defies expectations by creating a spectrum of artistic pursuits. But It’s Blanchard’s beautiful, provocative, inspiring jazz recordings that undergird all these projects
