SUMMARY:Black History Film Series February – “Miles of Smiles”
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nAs service workers in a luxurious sleeping-car train system\, Pullman porters had both the highest status in the black community and the lowest rank on the train. They were trapped in the dual roles of charming host and obedient servant\, and their constant smiles–even in the face of unreasonable demands by white passengers–were part of the job requirement. \n  \nJack Santino’s interviews with retired porters provide extensive firsthand accounts of their work\, the job inequities they faced\, the formation of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters\, and the aborted Pullman porter strike of 1928. Through the testimony of rank-and-file workers as well as key figures such as E. D. Nixon\, the porter who initiated the Montgomery bus boycott and helped launch the career of Martin Luther King\, Jr. and C.L. Dellums\, the only surviving founding member of the BSCP\, “Miles of Smiles\, Years of Struggle” illuminates the Pullman porters’ struggle for dignity. \n  \nImmediately following the film\, join us for the lively panel discussion. Brought to you in part by Humanities Texas. \n  \nADMISSION IS FREE\, BUT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! \nTo register click here. \n \nThis Production is not a presentation of the Carver Community Cultural Center or the Carver Development Board

SUMMARY:Black History Film Series March – Ida B. Wells: A Passion For Justice
DESCRIPTION:The doors to The Little Carver open at 5:30pm\, and the film begins at 6pm. \n“Ida B. Wells: A Passion For Justice” (NR) (1989\, 54 mins.) documents the dramatic life and turbulent times of the pioneering African American journalist\, activist\, suffragist and anti-lynching crusader of the post-Reconstruction period. At the time of the film’s initial release on The American Experience in late December 1989\, Wells had been virtually forgotten\, her autobiography long out of print. However\, Wells was a household name in Black America during much of her lifetime (1863-1931) and was considered the equal of such well-known contemporary African American leaders as Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. \nThe words of Wells are brought to life in the film through the performance of Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison as she reads selections from Wells’ memoir\, Crusade for Justice\,and other writings. \nImmediately following the film\, join us for the lively panel discussion. Brought to you in part by Humanities Texas. \nADMISSION IS FREE\, BUT REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! \nTo register click here. \n \nThis Production is not a presentation of the Carver Community Cultural Center or the Carver Development Board
