DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting workshop with Bessie award-winning\, NYC-based Camille A. Brown & Dancers! \nLed by Camille A. Brown and/or CABD company member Catherine Foster\, workshop participants will learn sections from BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play. In this work\, Brown uses the rhythmic play of African-American dance vernacular including social dancing\, double dutch\, steppin’\, tap\, Juba\, ring shout\, and gesture to evoke childhood memories of self-discovery. The rhythmic play of Double Dutch serves as an entry point to the rhythms and movements of social dances that are culturally\, individually\, and politically rooted. Participants will also learn the musical compositions of Hip Hop\, Reggae\, and African infused in the work and the connection between handclap games and “pattin’ juba”. A precursor to tap\, Juba is a dance developed by African-Americans on plantations during slavery in America. \nIt is Camille’s hope that the spirit of play is embodied and provides a platform for the individual to celebrate their identity. \nAll levels and all ages are welcome. \nTo register\, click here

DESCRIPTION:In the setting of the historic Carver Center in San Antonio\, Texas\, an aunt and her niece explore the history of African American music!  \nAunt Cynthia\, a music history buff\, helps her niece Lauren learn about the music genres that were born and formed by African American history and culture. They cover a wide breadth\, all the way from the times of slavery\, to Negro Spirituals\, Blues\, Ragtime\, Jazz\, the Harlem Renaissance\, Gospel\, the Civil Rights movement\, Soul and R&B\, and Hip Hop. Cynthia works to inspire Lauren’s curiosity about these periods of history by continuously making it relevant to the music\, and uses the layers of a quilt to explain how music of the past connects to the contemporary music that Lauren is most familiar with.
