SUMMARY:"The Glorious Way She Moves -- Black Venus\," An Exhibition by Barbara Felix
DESCRIPTION:Presented online and in-person\, Barbara Felix’s “The Glorious Way She Moves — Black Venus” explores the fullness and depth of the female form from youthful innocence to glorious maturity. \nIn-person exhibition hours: M-F\, 8-4 \n“As a woman of color\, I strive to address the malapropos labels placed upon my culture\, race and the feminine gender. My interpretive portraits illustrate the exuberance and individuality of each muse I celebrate. I strive to emphasize the remarkable features and characteristics of Black women in every phase of womanhood. In my process\, I video record each woman dancing\, and then jump to the film’s individual frames\, using them to help me expose and capture my subjects’ unique character and individuality. During their dance\, I specifically look for the physical nuances my subjects demonstrate. I then use these individual signature movements to reveal each subjects’ esthetic. By doing this I experience a connection to their beauty without stereotyping. It is that connection I share in my work.” – Barbara Felix\, artist

SUMMARY:Dee Dee Bridgewater
DESCRIPTION:If you purchased your tickets at The Carver Box Office\, please come by Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm. Please bring the tickets along with the credit card you used to purchase with. If your tickets were purchased online\, please allow 7-14 days for an automatic refund. \n  \n  \n  \nOver the course of a multifaceted career spanning four decades\, Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz giant Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists\, putting her unique spin on standards\, as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. Ever the fearless voyager\, explorer\, pioneer and keeper of tradition\, the three-time Grammy-winner’s career has always bridged musical genres. She earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band\, and throughout the 70s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach\, Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. After a foray into the pop world during the 1980s\, she relocated to Paris and began to turn her attention back to Jazz. Signing with Universal Music Group as a producer (Bridgewater produces all of her CDs)\, Bridgewater released a series of critically acclaimed titles beginning with Keeping Tradition in 1993. All but one\, including her wildly successful double Grammy Award-winning tribute to Ella Fitzgerald\, Dear Ella\, have received Grammy nominations. \n  \nOn Bridgewater’s most recent album\, Memphis…Yes\, I’m Ready\, she pays homage to the city of her birth and the rich Memphis music scene that formed her musical roots. She captured the magic and history of the Blues\, R&B and soul classics that she takes on as repertoire\, resulting in an album that sounds like Memphis and feels like Memphis but also sounds and feels as only a Dee Dee Bridgewater album can\, imbibed with her own fierce passion\, originality and incredibly dynamic interpretation of the songs.

SUMMARY:Unforgettable: A Tribute to Nat King Cole
DESCRIPTION:Unforgettable is the latest collaboration by vocalist/writer/director José Rubén De León\, pianist Dr. Aaron Ellington Prado and George Prado. Unforgettable promises to be a worthy follow-up to their successful shows Simplemente Lara\, El Corazón del Bolero and Nosotros\, a tribute to the music of Los Panchos. \nThe new show weaves together two dozen songs associated with Nat King Cole\, including “Straighten Up and Fly Right\,” “Mona Lisa\,” “Nature Boy\,” “Too Young\,” “The Christmas Song” and the title tune. There will be a small nod to the Mexican composer Agustín Lara with the inclusion of the Mexican composer’s “Solamente Una Vez\,” which Cole recorded late in his career as part of a shift in focus toward his international audience. He made the move because rock ‘n’ roll had begun to dominate popular music. \nThe narrative that ties the songs throughout the musical production will skillfully paint a portrait of what life was like for an African American entertainer in the ’30s\, ’40s\, ’50s and ’60s.  Early on Cole was forced to wear makeup that made his flesh appear lighter\, lest nightclub audiences be offended by his dark skin. Later on\, when he was routinely selling millions of albums each year and purchased a new home in an affluent neighborhood\, he faced vocal protests\, including cross burnings and the poisoning of the family dog.

SUMMARY:Eleven Reflections on September *
DESCRIPTION:Eleven Reflections on September is a poetry/spoken word\, multimedia performance on Arab American experience\, wars on/of terror\, and “the constant\, quiet rain of death amidst beauty” that each autumn brings in a post-9/11 world.  This production is based on the series of poems Andrea Assaf has written since 2001. Aesthetically\, the poems explore the disintegration of language in the face of violence\, prejudice\, and unspeakable horror; as such\, they progress from lyrical to abstract and broken.  The annual witnessing of autumn leaves becomes a metaphor for the fallen–soldiers and civilians. \nThis multi-disciplinary performance features writing and direction by Andrea Assaf\, as well as an all-women Middle Eastern music ensemble including Syrian opera singer Lubana Al Quntar\, violinist Eylem Basaldi and percussionist April Centrone. \nThis performance is part of an extended residency occurring from October 2020-November 2021 during which Assaf will engage with the San Antonio community and beyond through a series of workshops\, online “Reflection Sessions”\, community discussions and will ultimately culminate in the creation of a new large-scale\, community-based\, devised piece created by engaging Middle Eastern/North African (MENA) and Muslim artists and allies from across San Antonio.  Written about our community by our community.
