SUMMARY:Joaquin & The Glowliners
DESCRIPTION:The Glowliners\, fronted by lead vocalist Joaquin Muerte\, list San Antonio soul pioneers Sunny and The Sunliners and The Royal Jesters among their biggest influences. Their sound is a “Chicano Motown” that envisions Stevie Wonder crossed with Joe Jama or Donny Hathaway meets Sunny Ozuna. \nShowcasing multi-rhythm tracks ranging from fast bops to slow-tempo brown-eyed soul\, Joaquin echoes the Doo-Wop Era with three-part harmonies. Staying true to the legacy\, Joaquin seeks to revive the duty of Chicano musicians to bridge the gap between social justice activism and soul music from the civil rights movement.\nJoaquin & The Glowliners explore the intricacies of barrio romance and are richly textured reminders that Chicano love is indeed forever. \nRounded out by vocalists Amanda Joy Thomson and Sarah Rocha Bars\, the full band features Felipe Iruegas Jr. on guitar\, Luis “El Wicho” Gonzalez on bass and Jacob Benavides on drums.

SUMMARY:Nine Parts - Filming screening & conversation with Heather Raffo
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n\n\nJoin Carver Community Cultural Center and KLRN for a film screening and community conversation with Heather Raffo\n\n\n\nNine Parts – Film Screening & Conversation with Heather Raffo \nJoin Carver Community Cultural Center and KLRN for an an evening of cinematic exploration and engaging discussion with acclaimed playwright and actor\, Heather Raffo. The evening will feature a screening of “Nine Parts\,” – a new film adaptation of the internationally acclaimed one-woman play\, Nine Parts of Desire. \nStay for tea and a community talkback with Heather Raffo immediately following the screening. \nAbout Nine Parts – The Film \nOne woman. Nine stories. \nTorn by her father’s death and a divided nation\, an Iraqi American woman attempts to grieve at the site of the oldest Iraqi Church in North America. What starts in isolation becomes communal as Iraqi women—ordinary and extraordinary—come to and through her with her personal stories of love and resilience. \nBased on the internationally-acclaimed solo show\, Nine Parts revisits a groundbreaking play for the screen and for our current times. Newly set in Michigan at the height of the pandemic\, Nine Parts is a first-of-its-kind bridge between the Midwest and the Middle East\, offering audiences a unique window into the Iraqi female experience. Directed by Mike Mosallam\, produced by Nilou Safinya\, and airing nationally on PBS. \nWatch the PBS Newshour feature on the film here. \nHistory \nNearly 20 years ago Heather Raffo’s play\, Nine Parts of Desire\, premiered to widespread acclaim in London and Off Broadway\, later becoming a global theatrical phenomenon. Championed by The New Yorker as “an example of how art can remake the world”\, it became the first theatrical commercial success nationally and internationally by an Arab American playwright. It initially premiered in the U.K. in 2003\, where critics hailed it as one of the five best plays in London’s Off West End theater season. Later\, it ran Off Broadway for nine sold out months and was a critic’s pick (of The New York Times\, Time Out\, and Village Voice) for over 24 weeks in a row. Since 2005\, Nine Parts of Desire has been produced in nearly every theater market in the U.S. and was one of the top five most produced plays of the 2007–2008 American Theater season with international productions in over a dozen countries\, some being performed to this day. Now studied in universities across the nation\, Nine Parts of Desire helped forge a whole new genre of Arab American theater and continues to impact new generations globally\, offering audiences not only a deeper understanding of their relationship to the Middle East but to each other. \n\nTo register\, click here.

SUMMARY:Mavis Staples
DESCRIPTION:Mavis Staples has been celebrated by NPR as “one of America’s defining voices of freedom and peace\,” and after 75 years of performing she isn’t showing any signs of slowing down in that mission. The last surviving member of The Staple Singers\, Mavis reigns as both a Blues and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and a civil rights icon whose impact on music and culture can’t be overstated. Consider that Staples is a Grammy winner\, Kennedy Center honoree\, National Arts Awards Lifetime Achievement recipient and a chart-topping soul/gospel/R&B pioneer. She marched with Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, performed at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration\, sang in Barack Obama’s White House and has collaborated with everyone from Prince and Bob Dylan to Arcade Fire and Aretha Franklin. \n“I sing because I want to leave people feeling better than I found them\,” Staples has said. “I want them to walk away with a positive message in their hearts\, feeling stronger than they felt before.” That message\, a call for love\, faith\, justice\, brotherhood and joy\, is the foundation of We Get By\, her celebrated 12th studio album and first full-length collaboration with multi-Grammy winner Ben Harper.
