SUMMARY:Jody Watley
DESCRIPTION:Jody Watley\, singer/songwriter/producer/businesswoman\, is one of the architects of 21st century pop genre. From her ground breaking marriage of rap & R&B to her vision-forward marriage of high fashion\, street fashion and music in the ‘80’s\, to her fusion of jazz and underground club culture with keen pop instincts\, Jody Watley forged the template that is now everybody’s playbook. She was the winner of the Best New Artist Grammy in 1987. Watley’s entire career has been about looking forward\, drawing inspiration from personal heroes and iconoclasts. The Chicago native’s eclectic repertoire – R&B\, hip-hop\, House\, jazz\, pop\, drum & bass\, ambient\, spoken-word – is built on a positive vision and a strong taste for artistic and aesthetic risk. For the past five years\, the ever multi-tasking Jody Watley has focused on both her thriving solo career and the group project “Jody Watley featuring SRL.” Much like Prince had The Revolution as extensions of his music\, SRL allows Watley another outlet for her artistic expression. SRL is a collective of gifted singers\, dancers\, and choreographers who bring their own cool style and vibe to Watley’s trademark high-energy performances.

SUMMARY:Ranky Tanky
DESCRIPTION:Ranky Tanky released their eponymous debut on Oct. 20th\, 2017. By December of that year\, the group had been profiled on NPR’s “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross and their album soared to the #1 position on the Billboard\, i-Tunes\, and Amazon Jazz Charts. \nThe group features singer Quiana Parler\, singer/guitarist Clay Ross\, trumpeter/singer Charlton Singleton\, bassist Kevin Hamilton\, and drummer Quentin Baxter. Singleton\, Hamilton\, and Baxter initially played together in the jazz ensemble\, Gradual Lean\, in the late ’90s\, not long after graduating from the College of Charleston. \nNow\, united by years apart and a deeper understanding of home\, these accomplished artists have come together once more\, joined by one of the low-country’s most celebrated vocalists\, Quiana Parler\, to revive a “Heartland of American Music” born in their own backyards.\n “Gullah” comes from West African language and means “a people blessed by God.” “Ranky Tanky” translates loosely as “Work It\,” or “Get Funky!” In this spirit this Charleston\, SC based quintet performs timeless music of Gullah culture born in the south eastern sea island region of the United States. From playful game songs to ecstatic shouts\, from heart-breaking spirituals to delicate lullabies\, the musical roots of Charleston\, SC are “rank” and fertile ground from which these contemporary artists are grateful to have grown.

SUMMARY:Courageous Conversations #2 The Portrayal of Blacks in American Cinema
DESCRIPTION:The Carver Development Board invites you to join us for Courageous Conversations #2: Black Bodies on a White Screen: The Portrayal of Blacks in American Cinema \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists for this event are Dr. Charles Gentry\, UTSA Lecturer of African American Studies & Antoinette Winstead\, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Our Lady of the Lake University. \nIn American cinema\, black bodies are often on display for a white gaze\, leading to images that reflect historical prejudices and bigotry and ingrained social bias against Blacks in America\, even when filmed by black filmmakers\, some of these images still persist\, whether it’s the casting of actress with a light complexion as love interest or the overt sexualization of the black male body. \nIn the 21st Century\, why do these practices continue? This discussion on film will delve into this question while also providing some historical context. \nYour support helps The Carver Development Board continue to put on events like these\, to engage the community in thought-provoking activities\, and directly impacts education & community outreach programs of The Carver Center. \nA donation in any amount can be made using the link below: \nhttps://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=4JMVJ98N9MYTL

SUMMARY:"The Glorious Way She Moves -- Black Venus\," An Exhibition by Barbara Felix
DESCRIPTION:Presented online and in-person\, Barbara Felix’s “The Glorious Way She Moves — Black Venus” explores the fullness and depth of the female form from youthful innocence to glorious maturity. \nIn-person exhibition hours: M-F\, 8-4 \n“As a woman of color\, I strive to address the malapropos labels placed upon my culture\, race and the feminine gender. My interpretive portraits illustrate the exuberance and individuality of each muse I celebrate. I strive to emphasize the remarkable features and characteristics of Black women in every phase of womanhood. In my process\, I video record each woman dancing\, and then jump to the film’s individual frames\, using them to help me expose and capture my subjects’ unique character and individuality. During their dance\, I specifically look for the physical nuances my subjects demonstrate. I then use these individual signature movements to reveal each subjects’ esthetic. By doing this I experience a connection to their beauty without stereotyping. It is that connection I share in my work.” – Barbara Felix\, artist

SUMMARY:Dee Dee Bridgewater
DESCRIPTION:If you purchased your tickets at The Carver Box Office\, please come by Monday – Friday 8am – 4pm. Please bring the tickets along with the credit card you used to purchase with. If your tickets were purchased online\, please allow 7-14 days for an automatic refund. \n  \n  \n  \nOver the course of a multifaceted career spanning four decades\, Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz giant Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists\, putting her unique spin on standards\, as well as taking intrepid leaps of faith in re-envisioning jazz classics. Ever the fearless voyager\, explorer\, pioneer and keeper of tradition\, the three-time Grammy-winner’s career has always bridged musical genres. She earned her first professional experience as a member of the legendary Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band\, and throughout the 70s she performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach\, Sonny Rollins\, Dexter Gordon and Dizzy Gillespie. After a foray into the pop world during the 1980s\, she relocated to Paris and began to turn her attention back to Jazz. Signing with Universal Music Group as a producer (Bridgewater produces all of her CDs)\, Bridgewater released a series of critically acclaimed titles beginning with Keeping Tradition in 1993. All but one\, including her wildly successful double Grammy Award-winning tribute to Ella Fitzgerald\, Dear Ella\, have received Grammy nominations. \n  \nOn Bridgewater’s most recent album\, Memphis…Yes\, I’m Ready\, she pays homage to the city of her birth and the rich Memphis music scene that formed her musical roots. She captured the magic and history of the Blues\, R&B and soul classics that she takes on as repertoire\, resulting in an album that sounds like Memphis and feels like Memphis but also sounds and feels as only a Dee Dee Bridgewater album can\, imbibed with her own fierce passion\, originality and incredibly dynamic interpretation of the songs.
