SUMMARY:The Suffers
DESCRIPTION:There is a contagious and combustible energy every time the eight-piece band\, The Suffers\, steps on the scene. NPR’s Bob Boilen attributes the band’s allure to their “Soul\, straight from horn to heart.” He adds\, “This band is on fire when it’s in front of an audience…but the intensity of their shows is also captured in the studio.” Following The Suffers’ electrifying late-night TV debut on Letterman in 2015\, David Letterman exclaimed\, “If you can’t do this\, get out of the business!” The Suffers exploded onto the scene that same year with their dazzling EP Make Some Room followed by their heralded self-titled debut in 2016. There is something undeniable about The Suffers (whose name is a reference to the 1978 Jamaican film Rockers starring Leroy “Horsemouth” Wallace\, Jacob Miller and Burning Spear\, among others)\, that instantly hits home with their audiences. “We make music for all people\,” says lead vocalist Kam Franklin. “At this point\, we’ve played all over the world and one thing is certain – if the music is good\, the people will enjoy it.” Since 2011\, the H-Town heroes have been on a steady grind and have no plans of stopping. The band is working on their highly anticipated follow-up to Everything Here and will release new music the Fall of 2021.

SUMMARY:Nine
DESCRIPTION:Nine is a commemorative multi-media performance piece celebrating the heraldic bravery and pioneering of nine African American teenagers who were affectionately called the “Little Rock Nine.” The nine youth integrated the public schools in Little Rock\, Arkansas in September of 1957 amidst pressure from the governor of Arkansas to deny their access\, and several dissenting community members that daily hurled racist epithets and death threats at the youth for breaking the color line. Nine sets modern dance vocabulary\, visual art sets and costumes\, and moving music in dialogue with one another\, reminding our nation of its collective history while causing us to reflect upon the repercussions of those damages upon our current education system.

SUMMARY:Cleo Parker Robinson Dance
DESCRIPTION:Cleo Parker Robinson Dance (CPRD) is internationally esteemed as one of America’s foremost modern dance companies and regarded as a cultural ambassador\, infusing vitality\, innovation and education into every community they touch around the world. Founded by Cleo Parker Robinson in 1974\, CPRD performs a dynamic body of work fusing the African American experience with ethnic and modern dance traditions from around the world. Legendary and emerging artists alike are drawn by the spirit of the company to create works that transcend the boundaries of culture\, class and age while unequivocally and beautifully communicating the complexity of the human condition. \nThis performance will include the Texas premiere of The Four Journeys\, a new work conceived by Maestra Amalia Viviana Basanta Hernandez\, Artistic Director of Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. Centered on Mexican folk icon Catarina de San Juan’s global journey from India to 17th century Mexico\, the new ballet examines the confluence of culture in Mexico from its diverse Indigenous heritage to the more recent influences of European\, African and Asian infusions. SUMMARY:Gabriel Royal
DESCRIPTION:Be prepared for the silky vocal and calming tones of cellist and singer-songwriter\, Gabriel Royal. Born in Oklahoma yet based in Brooklyn\, Gabriel Royal was discovered playing his ‘grown up lullabies’ in the subway stations of New York City. It is there where he found his love for music through the genuine connection of live performing as well as his inspiration behind his work: the commuters of New York. Royal has since emerged as trailblazing talent with inimitable style and enviable range\, performing at NYC’s top music venues\, such as (Le) Poisson Rouge and The Blue Note Jazz Club. He has performed at sold-out crowds in countries around the world and collaborated with some of the industry’s most in-demand names. Royal’s spirit of playfulness and improvisation formed his first album\, a self-titled project released in 2016 and written mostly underground. Despite the album’s humble beginnings\, it established Royal as a singer-songwriter with extraordinary sensitivity and creative intuition. Known for his soaring vocals\, hum-along melodies\, and lush arrangements\, Royal is among a select number of artists combining cello and voice. Contemplating love and loss\, triumph and failure\, and the ups and downs of relationships within his music\, Royal is sure to win over his audience and captivate them with his remarkable talent.

SUMMARY:Kory Cook and The Whale
DESCRIPTION:“The Whale\, — the San Antonio free jazz trio of Kory Cook on drums\, Eddie Vasquez on saxophone and Justin Carney on bass — are known for their outstanding performances rooted in experimental jazz with a punk rock aesthetic. The outstanding trio play with a great deal of range and somehow make their free jazz appealing to all attendances. Cook\, the percussionist\, first started at KRTU FM as the jazz station’s music director before he became embedded in San Antonio’s music scene as the drummer for both jazz and rock. He has a pliability in his style that suits and by observing him truly unwind in this trio is a different experience all together
