SUMMARY:SAAACAM April Film Club “The Blind Stigma: Mental Health within the Black Community”
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \n“The Blind Stigma” is an award-winning film that made Canadian history by being the first documentary produced in Canada that discusses mental health within the Black community. It chronicles and testifies the stories of five individuals on their trials and triumphs with mental health. Each story is told bravely and effectively with additional context provided by mental health professionals\, religious leaders\, caregivers\, and your everyday citizen. Within the Black community\, mental health is deemed as a ‘Swept Under The Rug’ stigma that has been creating false illusions and assumptions for a long time. \nThat stigma is the core component of the Black community’s response to mental illness\, and therefore those who suffer from mental illness are less likely to seek treatment. As a result very few studies have been done on the impact of mental illness in the Black community. This film powerfully removes the veil of shame that clouds the topic of mental illness in the Black community\, challenges the misconception\, and gives a voice to those living with mental illness. \nDirectors: Stacy-Ann Buchanan\, 2023\, NR\, 60 mins \nImmediately following the film\, join us for the lively panel discussion with our panelists who will provide insight as well as mental health resources available to the San Antonio community. \nADMISSION IS FREE\, BUT PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!\nThe doors to The Little Carver open at 5:30pm\, and the film begins at 6pm. \nTo register\, click here.

SUMMARY:DreamWeek: Launch Party for the Graphic Novel "A Home\, A Church\, and A Hospital: The Development of East San Antonio" and film screening for the accompanying documentary
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \n \nCelebrate African American Heritage in San Antonio with the launch of OHP’s newest cultural heritage initiative. \nThe African American Heritage Preservation Initiative is a multi-year initiative taken by the Office of Historic Preservation aiming to identify\, promote\, and preserve San Antonio’s African American cultural heritage through community collaboration\, surveying historically African American neighborhoods\, and thoughtful\, thorough research. \nDuring this celebratory event\, the Office of Historic Preservation will share two major products from the initiative\, San Antonio’s first cultural context statement and a graphic novel. The African American and Black Cultural Context Statement is a tool and a resource to help the community\, researchers\, and preservationists identify important places\, events\, and forms of intangible heritage such as music\, songs\, dances\, spirituality\, festivals\, even parade routes. Cultural context statements also help make decisions about preserving cultural heritage. This work will result in local landmark designations\, National Register listings\, historic markers\, and other forms of commemoration. \nThe graphic novel titled “A Home\, a Church & a Hospital: The Development of East San Antonio” tells the story of how Charles Bellinger\, Greater Corinth Baptist Church\, and two nurses helped to shape the Eastside and contributed to San Antonio’s African American history. \nTo register\, click here. \nThis production is not a presentation of the Carver Community Cultural Center or the Carver Development Board.
